  • Launch of the WLLS Prize Essay Competition

    On 16 April 2021, WLLS launched its inaugural Prize Essay Competition on the subject of access to justice.

    Aimed at law students, apprentices, trainees and NQ solicitors connected with the WLLS membership area, there is a £500 prize for the winning entry which will also be published.

    The full essay title is “Is access to justice the cornerstone of a democratic society under the rule of law?  If so, why?  If not, why not?”

  • Property Seminar ESSENTIAL TAX UPDATE FOR RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY LAWYERS & HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE PROPERTY SECTOR!

    Speakers: Andrew Waddell, Nicola Watkins, Helen Gillespie In conjunction with West London Law Society, you are invited to a CPD property seminar which will provide an essential tax update for residential property lawyers. The seminar will be followed by a Q&A session and a ‘round table’ type discussion on the property sector.

    The engaging speaker for the evening will be Andrew Waddell, Managing Director, from Winslows, a boutique tax law firm that specialises in working with other law firms that do not have internal tax departments. The ‘round table’ type discussion will be hosted by Nicola Watkins and Helen Gillespie from LegalinX, a market leading property and company information provider. Nicola and Helen would like to explore key challenges currently facing the property law sector, the changing needs of customers and how firms are adapting and technology innovations and what impact they may have on the conveyancing process.

    WLLS is reviving its highly sociable jazz and wine nights to showcase one of the UK’s finest jazz pianists, Ted Beament, who played for many years in the renowned Humphrey Lyttleton band.  Our former President, Michael Simmons (2004/5), a lifelong jazz aficionado, will be hosting us at his home in Holland Park.

    We have a maximum of 30 places available for this unique event.  After some 50 years as a partner in two London law firms, Michael has a new career as a novelist dealing with the law and lawyers.  His third book, Double Exposure, was recently published to great acclaim, including a first-rate review in The Times law pages, and all guests will receive a complimentary copy.

  • Cyber Crime: the risks for solicitors and how to avoid them

    Cyber fraud and crime are key concerns in today's legal practice. For criminal practitioners cybercrime is the future - organised crime, online fraud, commercial espionage, sabotage and cyber stalking but what does it mean for the rest of us?

    What are the effects of cybercrime on businesses, SME’s, private clients and mixed practice pratitioners? For example, has a Computer Misuse offence been committed in your Family, Employment or Civil case?Learn what your firm’s PI Policy actually covers, common causes of cyber claims and how this will affect the PI market in the next few years. Find out about methods used by fraudsters to target client money and understand some key preventative measures you can take to safeguard your clients, your business and your reputation.   • “Asteroid Mining - Gold Rush or Going Bust”

    A look at the legal and other aspects of Asteroid Mining – a sequel to “Who Owns the Moon”

    A talk by Michael Morris Franks LLB, FBIS

    Event Date: 5th October 2016 Time 6.30

    A sequel to his fascinating talk last year, Michael will take a look at the current law on this subject, including the "Outer Space Treaty", the “Moon Treaty" and the “US Commercial Space Launch Competitiveness Act 2015", and the possible conflicts between these treaties and legislation. He will also review the Government of Luxembourg’s proposed legal framework, and look at the companies which are preparing to carry out Asteroid Mining as private entrepreneurs develop spacecraft capable of reaching low earth orbit and beyond.

    The talk will consider private international law and the jurisprudential theories of ownership to assist you in giving your certificate of competence to the SRA. Refreshments will be provided and the talk will be free to members and guests of West London Law Society and City of Westminster and Holborn Law Society. Space is limited so please book early.

    This will be an event in World in Space Week which is a week designated by the United Nations to celebrate each year at international level the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition

    We are delighted that Sir Ivan Lawrence QC, author of My Life of Crime , will be our main guest and speaker. Sir Ivan is one of the most experienced and charismatic QC's at the criminal bar today, and has won a considerable reputation, mainly as a defender, in some of the UK's most notorious cases. His practice has also taken him to The Hague in a mass murder war crimes trial. As an MP for 23 years, Sir Ivan was heavily involved in improvements to criminal justice, whilst continuing his practice in the criminal courts, and also sat regularly as a Recorder in London. 

    We hope that you, your colleagues and guests will join us for an enjoyable and memorable evening.  Each attendee will receive a pre-dinner drink and three-course dinner with wine. Further details to follow shortly.

    The Law Society’s annual Presidents and Secretaries conference takes place on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th May at the Law Society’s building in Chancery Lane, London. This flagship event will incorporate a varied mix of plenary and breakout sessions ensuring delegates are offered the opportunity to discuss common challenges, share experiences and hear practical tips from both their peers and expert speakers.

    Great care has been taken to create a programme which recognises the different challenges each local law society face. As a result, the 2016 programme includes additional workshop sessions allowing delegates to attend more sessions relevant to their needs. Local law society Presidents and Honorary Secretaries are invited: if either are not able to attend a suitable committee member is very welcome to attend in their place.

    A 10km charity fundraising walk in central London. No entry fee but we do ask every walker to raise as much sponsorship as they can. All funds raised will support free legal advice charities in London and the South East.
